About Grolsch

Where is Grolsch Brewed?

Our first Grolsch brewery was located in Groenlo, Eastern Holland back in 1615.

For a couple of hundred years as fashions changed, we brewed beer.

Then by 1895, so many people were enjoying Grolsch we had to open another brewery in nearby Enschede.

More years passed, fashions continued to change, and more and more people started to appreciate Grolsch's great taste.

By 1988 we decided to replace the two existing breweries with a new state-of-the-art one which was finally opened on April 7th 2004 again in Enschede.

The fact it took sixteen years to complete shows just how much effort we put into making it into one of the most modern and environmentally friendly breweries in the world.

Can I go to see the Dutch brewery?

When we say Welcome to the Green Light District we mean it.

Our brewery is open to visitors all year round.

You can see how the beer is produced and bottled thanks to a long glass wall that runs the entire length of the site.

Come along and naturally you'll have a little sample.

Why is Grolsch called Grolsch?

Grolsch was first brewed in the small Dutch town of Grolla, or Groenlo as it's now called.

Translated Groenlo means 'green wood or forest' and Grolsch means 'beer from the green wood.'

The secret of Grolsch's success (and how it got its logo.)

Two hops from different sides of the tracks. They shouldn't get on, but they meet, there are fireworks, and wham bam thank you Master Brewer Peter Cuyper.

He's the guy who four hundred years ago decided to do a bit of matchmaking on our two hops. Before you could say second date, Grolsch was born.

We remember Peter's marriage from heaven in our logo where you can see our taste hop and our aroma hop holding each other in a loving embrace.

These days, they stand for a love of good beer and a belief in doing things differently.

A good outlook for life in general, we think.

Where in the world can I get a Grolsch? - snippet

Just about everywhere. It's exported to more than 80 countries worldwide so you can even find a little bit of Enschede in Ecuador.

How is Grolsch made? MAIN

We'd like to tell you, but if we did, you wouldn't have to buy it anymore. Still, we wouldn't be Dutch if we didn't tell you at least some of the secrets:

  1. Soft water is drawn from our brewery wells 600 ft below ground.
  2. 100% pure malted barley is mixed in.
  3. Then a blend of hops is added early in the brew to create Grolsch's distinctive taste.
  4. Hallertau Perle hops are added much later to provide the beers characteristic aroma.
  5. Next goes in our unique strain of yeast.
  6. Grolsch then undergoes a unique longer brewing period. (Hence our slogan, 'We only let you drink it when it's ready.')
  7. We wait.
  8. We wait a bit longer.
  9. 'Tum de dum.'
  10. Finally it is ready, and the Grolsch has a rich, golden colour and is always 5% alcohol by volume (ABV).
  11. You enjoy it.
